Public Figure Facebook – Basic Guide

When you are a social media manager, you will most likely run into managing a public figures account. Sometimes they already have the account set up, other times you start from scratch. For the sake of learning, lets start from square one.

First, be sure to sign your public figure up with Facebook AS a PUBLIC FIGURE. Don’t give them a regular Facebook account. Please.

Pick a tense and stick with it.
Choose a cover photo that is either a picture of them or is based on their profession, something that gets their personality across. It’s always best if it’s not a stock photo.
Create a logo for their personal brand, it can be just their name in a cool typeface.
Custom Facebook App buttons. Lets be real, every Facebook account should have custom app buttons. Outdated, but still available.

About section –
Include short descriptive to describe what they do and who they are.
Include a short Bio and professional history.
Include a mission statement, if they do not have a personal mission statement, include their business mission statement.

How often do you post? Daily. People follow other people to learn from them. I always say that you should offer an appetizer of information. Give them some of your knowledge, something that they can learn but only so much that it makes them want more. Never offer up the whole meal for free. Post something enticing and link it back to their website or blog to direct traffic to multiple sites.

Do you need a strategy for a public figure Facebook? Yes. Managing someones Facebook account is still managing a Facebook account. For strategy of a public figure, plan around speaking events, concerts, promotions etc. and go from there. Post relevant information for your field and be sure to post about current events.

PR is a big part of this so be sure to align with the PR department or have someone you can consult to ensure they are shown in the correct light.

Some tips:
Be Yourself (the public figure). People follow them because they like them.
Offer exclusives. Teach them from their experience.
Use the Facebook App on your phone. It makes it easier to post live during events.
Post content that is worth sharing!
Respond to your followers.
